MEDIA BUYING GUIDE

What do PT, OPT, DT and ODT mean?

A daypart describes the time window in which an ad runs. On TV, PT means prime time and OPT off-prime time. On radio, DT means drive time and ODT off-drive time. The daypart affects the unit rate for the same spot.

Do not assume identical hours for every channel

PT describes a peak-viewing daypart and OPT the hours outside it. DT is associated with commuting listening habits. Exact time windows, programmes and inventory must be defined in the channel or station proposal. A generic timetable should not be applied to every broadcaster.

The cheaper daypart is not always the better fit

A lower per-second rate is not a better plan if the intended audience is unlikely to watch or listen then. Consider business hours, the campaign message and audience habits together. A daypart rate alone does not establish reach, ratings or sales.

How do you allocate dayparts in the calculator?

You can select one or both dayparts. Unselected dayparts are not charged. Each selected format and daypart requires at least 20 airings on European channels and at least 8 on other TV channels and radio stations. Quantities cover the whole campaign; changing the allocation affects both net cost and the total including VAT.

Worked budget example

For a European channel, 13 sec × 20 OPT × EUR 3 = EUR 780 net, or EUR 936 including 20% VAT. The same 20 airings in PT cost 13 × 20 × 5 = EUR 1,300 net, or EUR 1,560 including 20% VAT. This compares cost, not equivalent reach.
