# Spot advertising versus lower-third advertising

By [Network Flow](https://networkflow.com.tr/about/) · Updated 17 September 2026

A spot runs in an advertising break with its own picture and sound. A lower-third is an ad placed over the programme picture. Choose based on the message, readability and material requirements as well as the per-second rate.

## Choose the format for the message

A product demonstration, story or spoken explanation may suit a spot. A brief visual announcement may work as a lower-third. Long copy squeezed into a small overlay makes a message harder to read. Focus on the logo, one benefit and a legible response.

## Read the duration and unit rate together

In this calculator, a spot starts at 10 seconds and can be edited; a lower-third is fixed at 8 seconds. Its per-second rate is 10% above the news-channel spot rate and 25% above the European-channel spot rate. Because it is shorter, its per-airing cost may still be lower than some spot plans. Compare durations explicitly.

## Confirm acceptable materials before production

Dimensions, safe areas, file format, sound and deadlines depend on the broadcaster’s requirements. Confirm them before producing the ad. The calculator allows spot only, lower-third only or both; selecting both adds the plans for each format.

## Worked budget example

Show Türk lower-third: 8 sec × 20 PT × EUR 6.25 = EUR 1,000; 8 sec × 20 OPT × EUR 3.75 = EUR 600. Net EUR 1,600 + 20% VAT of EUR 320 = EUR 1,920 including VAT. A 13-second spot with the same quantities totals EUR 2,496 including 20% VAT.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is lower-third pricing identical on every channel?

No. The calculator uses different rates for news and European channels. National channels require tailored quotes.

### What happens if I choose both formats?

Each format’s selected dayparts and quantities are calculated separately. Net amounts in the same currency are added and 20% VAT is applied.
